The Garhwal English Medium School (GEMS) is a vital, non-profit educational initiative located in Sainji Village, Kempty, near Mussoorie, and is run by the NGO, The Garhwal Organization for Uplifting the Needy (GOUN). Established in 2009, the school was founded to address the poor quality of education in the rural Garhwal region.
GEMS offers an English medium education from Nursery to Class 12, primarily serving children from underprivileged families whose parents often lack formal education. The school’s mission is to provide these children with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to compete for higher education and better careers.
Its unique, holistic approach goes beyond academics by addressing the critical needs of its students, including providing essential nutritional support, hygiene, and healthcare. The school encourages an activity-based learning model, a departure from traditional rigid teaching methods, with the support of dedicated staff and international volunteers. GEMS is fundamentally a community-focused project working to bring about positive, lasting change.
